Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Statement
In US academia, women and underrepresented minorities (URMs) have been historically excluded. DEI in science must be promoted not only because of ethical reasons but also because inclusion ultimately serves to increase innovative findings. Due to past DEI efforts in science, since the 90’s, the proportion of URM entering college pursuing STEM and working as biomedical scientists has nearly tripled. However, URM students and scientists leave science at much higher rates than their well-represented counterparts. This is likely due to feeling isolated because of the lack of support and role models. To further promote DEI in science in the US, I commit to providing continuous support for all levels (technicians, students, and postdocs) of women and URM scientists.
