Research Summary

The ability of tissues to grow to their proper size during development and sustain cell renewal after tissue damage is critical to organ function. Using the endocrine pancreas as a model tissue with limited growth potential, we have shown that organ and/or age-specific tissue growth and regenerative potential reflects the recruitment, expansion and/or functional specialization of select myeloid populations. We focus on identifying the signaling pathways and the progenitor cell pools responsive to these regenerative cues. Organ-on-chip models are further used to model aspects of human diabetes.

DEI Statement

As an immigrant myself, I have always been sensitive to be inclusive of students, trainees and personnel of any nationalities and cultural backgrounds in my laboratory. In my experience as an educator, I found that true engagement with diverse communities relies on listening, working closely in person, and stay connected to understand and mutually adapt. I believe this to be a winning recipe to fostering that sense of empowerment so important to younger generations’ growth and success.
