Evolution of novel cell types and cellular behaviors in chordates

Research Summary

Cells are continually reshaped throughout evolution allowing for animals to adapt to an everchanging environment. Our lab focuses on the evolution of novel cell types and cellular behaviors by comparing homologous cells across distantly related chordate species. We are studying how cells evolve at the levels of individual fate specification to multicellular morphogenesis. Currently, we are analyzing cellular innovation in the annual killifish Nothobranchius furzeri, whose embryos evolved under strong selection pressure imposed by their environment that evaporates during the dry season.

Science should benefit everyone; therefore, we need to act to ensure that all people are able to participate and ultimately shape that science. As a faculty member, I am committed to use my platform to increase diversity and inclusion in our academic community. In 2020, I was elected as the Diversity Officer for the Pan-America Society of Evolutionary and Developmental Biology (PASEDB). As the Diversity Officer, my primary goal is to create an award and mentoring program for underrepresented minority postdocs that seeks to empower them to succeed as junior faculty.
