Mentoring Statement

My group studies how gene regulation shapes brain cell identity. Our work began in brain evolution and comparative biology and is now expanding into neurodegenerative disease through the Brain Health Accelerator. We use human and cross-species atlases to understand why particular cells and circuits are vulnerable and to develop genetic tools that can target them. This work brings computational and experimental scientists together and builds on the Allen Institute’s commitment to open, team science. I mentor graduate students, visiting scientists, and early-career researchers by giving them ownership of meaningful projects and room to work across teams. My goal is to help them develop the judgment and independence to build the data, models, and tools needed to understand and eventually treat brain disease.
