Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Statement
One of my favorite things about academic research is the diversity of scientists and ability to collaborate internationally. I look back fondly on the lab where I trained as a graduate student at NYU – where my PI and the majority of the lab were not born in the US, spoke many other languages and came from many different backgrounds. I try to replicate that welcoming work environment in my own lab, where my lab members come from many backgrounds and life histories. I collaborate with researchers outside of the VAPSHCS, including internationally in Europe and South America. I encourage my lab members to explore science outside of their local environment, attending talks on unfamiliar topics, and participating in meetings with a wide scope because I believe diversity applies not only to a person’s identity and background but also experiences, and new ideas often come from unexpected connections.
