Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Statement

At its core, science is about the discovery of knowledge and generation of new ideas. Diverse groups of individuals have a unique power to provide insight and advance knowledge in innovative ways. Despite this, science has historically been limited to the select and homogenous few who, whether based on background, racial and/or gender identity, were enabled and encouraged at the expense of inclusion of others. I fervently believe that this bias cannot continue and that we have a moral imperative to increase the representation of individuals from historically underrepresented groups. This is both about improving equity as well as the quality of science we as society support. I am committed to leading by example, providing an inclusive environment for all lab members to foster personal and professional growth. This means adapting my approach to each trainee’s background, needs, and interests with open and honest communication playing an essential role throughout the training process.
